Well, I’m just about 3 weeks into my training and I’m happy to report all is going well! Yay!
For that first week I have to be honest, I was scared every time I went out to run. I was so worried I would come home injured. I let myself heal for months before I started training again so felt I was at 100%, but your body can sometimes have a different agenda.
My coach Emily was smart and had me sloooowly build my miles up as she is familiar with my injuries and knows how I struggled training for my first Marathon that didn’t happen.
I have been diligent about stretching and foam rolling after every run, plus getting massages every other week. Trying to be as smart as I can and honestly, I know what I need to do, it’s doing it that’s the hard part.
I honestly don’t want to run in anything else!! I have 3 pairs and I’m about to purchase a 4th, (Code IWR17 for 10% off). This was after a 3 mile run, they are exactly where I put them when I put them on. They don’t ride up AT ALL!!! So in love!
Anyway back to my training.
On days I’m not running I’m doing Pilates and I feel a huge difference in my strength and stamina. I’m mostly doing reformer work, but will throw in a Mat Pilates session now and then. My legs are feeling very strong and Pilates has been a godsend for my hip flexor muscles. All my pain goes away after a good Pilates session.
I have a really bad habit of lifting my shoulders when I run (too many years at a computer), but Pilates is making me more aware of my shoulders and I’m able to keep them down and out of my ears when running. Nothing worse then an aching shoulder when running.
But, what would training be without it’s challenges. It’s been in the 100’s here in Northern California. We’re talking 109° and 50% – 75% humidity, so getting out for my runs has been a bit of a struggle. It’s already in the high 70’s when you get up and 90’s in the evening.
When I realized no relief was in site, the days were slipping by and I still needed to get that 3 or 4 mile run in, I finally had to suck it up and go. I can say one thing, it’s made me a little stronger mentally. I have a goal and I just have to focus on that and tell myself, “you’re O.K., keep going” and it’s working!
Before I start working on speed, Emily wants me to build my miles a bit more, so while I’m doing this, I’m not really looking at my watch. I’m just running at a pace that feels good, well guess what?? My pace is actually getting faster and I’ve been getting more consistent negative splits, which in the past, was not something I’ve been able to do. Yay!!
I’ve also been taking my dog on the 3 mile runs as she also has a race next month. We’re doing the Hoofin and Woofin 5K race again this year. We placed 1st in our (my) age group last year 🙂
This year we’ll be running with a hands free leash so we can really kick some booty!
This weekend calls for a 5 mile run and thankfully the temps will be in the high 80’s (insert eye roll here).
I’m excited to see if I can finally meet that sub 60 10K goal. I haven’t put any pressure on myself and I’m just enjoying the process knowing that if I put the work in, the results will come.
Until the next update and thank you for following along!
